We had a visit from a wolf!!!
First of all, in Music we got tested on our West African drumming. We had to keep the beat and create rhythms. Our affirmations in yoga were "We are protective" and "we are strong." In our Daily News article we learned about a wolf that was captured in Victoria. Conservationists believe that the wolf came from an island and swam to the mainland. He probably ran out of resources and was looking for a new habitat. The rest of the morning was spent working on our Social Studies projects and tidying up the classroom. After lunch, we had time to listen to our Student Helpers share before heading to the Learning Commons for our wolf visit. We have a lot to share!

Today our goal was to focus on North Haven's Three R's, respect ourselves, respect others and respect this place. This is always an important goal as we aim to show kindness towards our peers. We are also trying our best to keep our room tidy for parent conferences!
After morning work, we had another drumming practice session with Mrs. Hartley in Music. We are looking forward to our performance next Friday. During yoga, our affirmations were "we are incredible," "we are creative" and "we are humble." Our Daily News article was about the importance of a baby's laugh in the Navajo culture. We learned that the first laugh is a symbol of the entry into the greater community and that the family community is extremely important. Whoever makes the baby laugh has to put on a feast for the baby's family! In Social Studies we continue to work hard on completing our good copies on our selected Indigenous group. We hope to display some finished products to show parents at conferences. In math we reviewed how to solve multiplication questions using traditional algorithm. We also used the rule of multiplying by multiples of ten to help estimate an answer. For example, 22x3 is close to 20x3, which is 60. After lunch we went snowshoeing again and we played "What time is it Mr. Wolf." What a workout running in snowshoes! During quiet reading, Ms. Wishart called some of us to her table to complete the last step of our animal art. In order for our art to resemble button blankets, we added dots along the edge of our images using white paint. Some are already on display for tomorrow night! At the end of the day, we kick started our new Science unit on Hearing and Sound. We watched a video and started a KWL chart, entering what we already know about hearing and sound. Ask us about a new invention that puts our fires using only sound. ***Don't forget, tomorrow is our wolf visit! We are so excited!!! Today we started our morning with some time to finish up our poems, art and journal pages.
In Music we played the drums, following the different beats that Mrs. Hartley modeled for us. Our Drumming Assembly is next Friday, February 7 at 10:30. Parents are welcome! Today our class had an early recess because we had a special guest arriving at 9:30. Mr. Lang from the University of Calgary came to talk to us about light and its properties. We shared a lot of information that we already know and he answered our questions. We then had three stations with experiments to try. One was building a maze and then setting up mirrors to try to reflect light from a flashlight through the maze to the other end. That was tricky but some of us figured it out! Another station required us to use some objects and flashlights to recreate some shadows Mr. Lang had printed out on paper. The last station was experimenting with shining light through different objects and recording what we see. We learned a lot and had fun too! In Math, we learned about and practiced the rules for multiplying by 0, 1, and 10. We noticed patterns that help us remember how to solve these types of question. After lunch, we tried out snowshoeing again. Now that we can get our snowshoes on quicker, we had more time to enjoy walking around with them. After quiet reading, we continued working on our Indigenous group good copies. And to end the day we got to explore the Book Fair and make a wish list if we want to buy some books on Thursday or Friday. **Report cards go home tomorrow! **The Book Fair will be open during Conferences Thursday evening and Friday morning. **No school for students on Friday. **Healthy Hunger!
The Parent Association is offering 4 more options in February and March. Please sign up at www.healthyhunger.ca Proceeds of these Fun Lunches and Snacks help the school directly. Snacks costs as little as $2!! And both lunches have a small option so students don't have to order a full meal if they choose. February 21- Kernels Popcorn February 27- Little Ceases March 13- Kernels Popcorn March 18- Edo Japan **North Haven will be hosting an Open House on February 3rd from 5:30-6:30. Join us for an information session, tour the building, visit classrooms, meet a few of the teachers, and learn about the engaging work of North Haven students! **Although it is early, planning for the 2020-21 school year is well underway. North Haven School will continue to serve North Haven community members and Harvest Hills students will be redesignated. More information about staying at North Haven and the redesignation for Harvest Hills students can be found on our school website. In order to assist us with our planning and organization for the upcoming school year we ask that you complete the following electronic form by Friday, February 14th , 2020. https://forms.gle/oQBKftEK7J8hZ1bz5. Thank you for assisting us with our planning for the upcoming school year. This morning we headed to the library to do book exchange and work on finishing up some assignments. Following that, we did yoga. Our affirmations were: We are calm and We are smart.
Our Daily News article was about a new exhibition here in Calgary celebrating a variety of indigenous music. We discussed how this exhibition hopes to acknowledge indigenous culture and help Canadians feel connected to this type of music. In Social Studies, we began to design our good copies that will represent the information we gathered through research about our world indigenous group. In Math, we practiced skip counting and two new multiplication strategies: "If... then..." and Doubling. For example, If 6x2=12, then 6x3=18 because we just have to add another group of 6. For example, 4x2=8, so 4x4=16, because we double the first answer when one of the numbers in the question is doubled. This afternoon we went snowshoeing! Snowshoeing was really nice. It gave us a chance to do PE outside in the fresh air and sunshine. We got to walk around with friends or wander around on our own. For Health, we had a session with Mr. V and Ms Rebecca about accessing our "tool box" to help focus. We can take movement breaks, use a fidget tool or give ourselves a hand massage. We also have tape on the floor in the hallway to guide us through a body break on the way to the fountain. We will focus on these tips this week. ***Tomorrow we have an exciting Science Residency called "Bright Lights." ***Book Fair is this week. ***Conferences are Thursday and Friday this week. ***Wolf Visit is on Thursday!!! Today was our Celebration of Learning!
We started off the morning with a quick rehearsal. We practiced our two songs, Lay It Down and Man in the Mirror. Then we performed our songs and presentation in the gym for staff, students and parents. We did amazing! We are so proud of ourselves! After recess, we practiced a new strategy in math. We learned traditional algorithm for multiplication and then we played math games small groups. After that we went to the gym to watch or participate in the teacher vs, student hockey games. The grade 1/2s tied the teachers, the teachers won against the gr.3/4s and the gr. 5/6s won against the teachers. There was great sportsmanship on all sides! Please sign up for conferences if you have not done so yet. Have a great weekend everyone! Today our Goal of the Day was: We will do our best! At the end of the day, we had another rehearsal for our assembly tomorrow, and considering it was a huge improvement from yesterday, we really did "do our best!"
This morning we had time to finish up on some assignments, such as poetry, research and some visual journal pages. We can't wait to share our wonderful work with parents next week at conferences. (You should have received an email to sign up for conferences next Thursday night or Friday morning.) During yoga, our affirmations were "We are kind" and "We are intelligent." Our Daily News article was about a study that aimed to explain why wolves aren't as active during snowfall events. We first made our own inferences before reading the article. After reading, we understood that it may have to do with the energy they need to travel through snow or the fact that it is more difficult to smell their prey during snowfall. After our hard work and focus we earned some game time this morning! In math, we explored the number line strategy for multiplication. We realized that this is just like skip counting or repeated addition, but just showing it visually on a number line. After lunch we had some time for our Student Helpers to share and to read silently before heading to the gym for a rehearsal. Afterwards we had our gym time outside. We are so excited for tomorrow! We hope to see many guests at our Celebration of Learning at 9:00 tomorrow! Our goal of the day was: We will be safe and show sportsmanship in gym. Some us felt we did good and others felt we still need to improve this goal. So Ms. Wishart was the tie breaker. She felt we have improved in our sportsmanship and teamwork skills, so we earned another reward token!
In Music, we practiced the songs for our assembly. Don't forget our Celebration of Learning is this Friday! Families are welcome to attend. It begins at 9:00 am. Our Daily News article was about a class in Airdrie who is demonstrating humility by sewing pouches for orphan kangaroos affected by the Australian bushfires. We were amazed at the kindness these grade one students are showing. In Science, we experimented with flashlights and lenses to see how light travels through concave, convex and prism objects. We recorded our observations and understanding in our visual journals. Our learning intention was: We can recognize that light can be bent (refracted) and that such objects as prisms and lenses can be used to show that light beams can be bent. In Math, we worked on the multiplication strategies of skip counting and arrays to show how we can group numbers and recognize number patterns. In gym, we played revenge tag to warm up. With partners we played badminton, focusing on switching between overhand and underhand passes. Ms. Wishart has seen so much improvement in our skills! In Social Studies, we continued our research and most of the groups are done! We will soon start working on our good copies by representing our information on posters that zoom out from a world map. Today our goal was: We will have fun without losing focus. Monday's can be tough to focus and work hard all day, but we definitely improved this goal! We earned another reward token!
After morning work when we had time to finish up our Subtraction Problem of the Week and work on poetry, we visited the library. During yoga, our student helpers chose the affirmations "We are creative" and "We are positive." Our Daily News article today was about a study that indicated that wolves are just as cooperative, or even more so, than domestic dogs. The wolves dogs learned how to push a button to give food to another animal and wolves would do this consistently if the other wolf was part of their of their pack. We knew wolves were humble! In Literacy we continued working on our poetry. Some of us have started our good copy after hearing peer and teacher feedback. In Math, we enjoyed a couple rounds of "Splat" where we had to determine different possible combinations of numbers hidden under "splats" that equal a given total. This led into an introduction to multiplication. After lunch, we played badminton in the gym, enjoyed silent reading and worked in our groups to research indigenous groups around the world. We are almost done researching and will start our good copy posters soon. We ended the day with game time for our amazing afternoon of work! |
