For a half day, we were busy!
Following our morning catch-up work, we began the first of our three inquiry-based groups. In Art, we researched Norval Morrisseau, an Indigenous artist who was known as the "grandfather" of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. He was also awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions. Ask us about any other interesting facts about Mr. Morrisseau. In the coming weeks, we will explore his style and techniques and create our own art inspired by his work. Our learning intentions are: I can assess the visual qualities of objects, and I can interpret artworks by examining their context and less visible characteristics. Our second rotation took us to French class with Ms. Collinge, who is also teaching us words and phrases in the Blackfoot language. Then we visited Ms. Henry to begin a new construction project in our STEM class. Before the end of the day, we participated in silent reading/guided reading and had time to finish up our Daphne Odjig inspired yarn art. We also earned game time today and played a round of "Toy Shop." Have a great weekend everyone! Some Important Reminders: -Please return field trip forms next week. -The Gr. 3/4 students will be engaging in a STEM challenge. If you have extra shoe boxes please donate them so we can create a 3D diorama! Thank you for your support in our learning! -Don't miss out on your child's Healthy Hunger Fun Lunches/Snacks! We started our day with our morning work. We are busy finishing up several projects as next week we will begin new units in Science, Social Studies and Math. Our Alberta Tourism brochures are now due and have been assigned for homework if not yet done.
After a yoga session, we participated in our Daily News reading circle. Our news article, titled "Blackfoot Artifacts brought back to Life," sparked some curiosity with regards to the purpose of creating 3D models of cultural artifacts and an interest in the technology used to develop them. Ask us why university students are creating these 3D models. Today we had our patterns test, marking the end of another math unit. We look forward to reviewing addition and subtraction strategies in the coming weeks. Following a variety of tag games in the gym, we settled into our guided reading groups or independent reading. Our focus today was on the Power of Connecting. Our task was to make connections ( text-to-self, text-to-text or text-to-world) to the story we were reading and record them on our Reading Powers page. At the end of the day we worked on our yarn art designs. Tomorrow we will learn about the style and artworks of another Indigenous artist. **Please send any shoeboxes you do not need with your child. We are starting an exciting STEM project soon. This morning in Math we practiced patterns on number lines and in chart form, Our learning intention is:I can demonstrate an understanding of increasing patterns by: describing, extending, comparing, creating numerical (numbers to 1000) and non-numerical patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds and actions.
We then played a fun Jeopardy game reviewing everything we know about Patterns. Because our test is tomorrow, please try to practice some questions from the jeopardy game. Here is the link to the game: https://jeopardylabs.com/play/grade-34-math-patterns-review2 In Literacy, we started a journal page about Reading Powers. We will focus on the powers Connect, Visualize, Infer, Questioning, and Determining Importance while reading various texts. This afternoon we began guided reading. During guided reading, we will read to self or in a teacher-guided group. We then fill in one section of our reading powers page. Today's focus was on Questioning, where we wrote what we wonder about while reading the story. Our learning intention is: I can listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts. Reminders: Please return field trip forms. This Friday students will be engaging in a STEM challenge. If you have extra shoe boxes please donate them so we can create a 3D diorama! Thank you for your support in our learning! From North Haven Parent Association:
Opportunity - Defined by Webster as a favorable juncture of circumstances and a good chance for advancement or progress. We teach our children to find opportunities in all situations, and today marks a chance to lead by example. The North Haven Parent Association is committed to supporting the school in its efforts to provide resources and opportunities that will continue to enhance our students’ learning. The holiday season is one that inspires many to give, and we would ask that you consider North Haven School as a place to give. Outside of our regular product fundraisers, North Haven Parent Association is offering parents and others an additional opportunity to donate money to North Haven to directly support our school. Our fundraising goal is $5000 to ensure parent funded enhancements to our children’s education are continued. You can support our students by writing a cheque payable to the Calgary Board of Education, today. Cash and credit card donations will be accepted at our Community Outreach Night, December 12, 2019. All support is sincerely appreciated and completely voluntary. 100% of the funds donated go directly to the school to support students, and tax receipts are issued for any donations of cheques over $25.00. Please know that ANY amount that your family can donate is much appreciated. Many companies offer donation matching programs! The CBE is a registered charity and qualifies for this program. Please enquire with your HR department to see if your donation will be eligible. The Calgary Board of Education will issue donation receipts for donations over $25.00 only. Please make all cheques payable to “North Haven School.” Donations made will be eligible for a tax receipt which will be dated for the 2020 tax year. Thank you for your support. North Haven Parent Association Today we started our day by reading an article about Indigenous quilting. Ask us what symmetry represents or why it is important to Metis? We also talked about why four is a sacred number. Ask us why! Here is the link to the article..
A Spectacular Collection of Native American Quilt https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/a-spectacular-collection-of-native-american-quilts-11108340/ We then worked on our self assessment of "The Sacred Steps of Animal Life Cycles." We are just wrapping this up. After recess, we started our Math visual journal page. We are creating patterns using lines of symmetry. We have now learned repeating patterns, increasing patterns, decreasing patterns, and pattern rules. Our learning intentions are I can demonstrate an understanding of increasing patterns by: describing, extending, comparing, creating numerical (numbers to 1000) and non-numerical patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds and actions. We then started our goal setting visual journal page. Ask us what our four goals are (reading, writing, math, and social goal). After lunch, we had gym. We were playing hockey. We then did our Science test on animal life cycles. Our learning was I can describe the appearances and life cycles of some common animals, and identify their adaptations to different environments. Field trip forms are going home. We are still in need of three more volunteers. Please email Ms. Wishart at [email protected] if you are able to join. We are heading to the Glenbow Museum on December 9th. Please see the "Field Trip" section above for upcoming important dates. Also a huge shout out to students for bringing their garbage home or garbageless lunches and helping with our environment. This connects to our science unit on waste and our world with a learning intention of I can compare different kinds of packaging, and infer the relative advantages and disadvantages of that packaging. In evaluating different forms of packaging, students should demonstrate the ability to consider a consumer perspective as well as an environmental perspective. This Friday students will be engaging in a STEM challenge. If you have extra shoe boxes please donate them so we can create a 3D diorama! Thank you for your support in our learning! Here is the link for the Science jeopardy game with questions related to the test: https://jeopardylabs.com/play/animal-life-cycles-23 Following library and our yoga session, we listened to another article about Metis beading. We continued our work on our shape patterns, describing the pattern rule and began writing a description about the history and significance of beading in the Metis culture. Ask us what key images are included in traditional beadwork. It's interesting how the beading is representative of the blending of two cultures (Indigenous and European). After recess, we learned how to represent patterns on a number line and practiced some examples before Jeff Stockton arrived. Jeff Stockton told the rest of the story we have waited for since Wednesday. It was about a hungry dragon who was tricked by a woman with riddles and saved her son. In our journals, we are writing a connection to the story. After gym this afternoon, we had an opportunity to review our knowledge of science vocabulary pertaining to animal life cycles. Please review the questions from the above jeopardy link with your child. We are still in need for volunteers for our field trip to Glenbow Museum on December 9. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach me at [email protected]. Kind regards, Ms. Erica Dunwoody Learning Leader North Haven Elementary 4922 North Haven Drive N.W. In Music we played Indigenous drums where we played beats and made our own drumming patterns.
This morning in Math we began to make colored shape patterns that represent Metis beadwork. Our goal is to incorporate a flower, an important symbol in Metis culture. Following up on our "cliffhanger" session with Jeff Stockton, we added a description to our "Storytelling" page. We had to use our imagination to describe what we think happens next in the story and how it ends. We are also wondering what the moral of this story might be. Ask your child what they think it is. We ended the day working on our animal life cycles and yarn art. Reminder: Tomorrow is a PD day and there is no school. This morning in Music we played the Aboriginal drums and we learned the heartbeat of the drum. A reminder that we do not need our recorders tomorrow.
Our Daily New article was about an Ojibway teacher who taught students how to bead, incorporating both math and social studies concepts. In the process, the students learned about patterns and the history and culture of Indigenous people and the art of beading. Tomorrow we will be using the inspiration of Aboriginal beadwork to design our own shape patterns. In Math we worked on our topic of "Patterns of Humility in Indigenous Art." Today we finished our color patterns and wrote a description about our patterns. We also wrote a summary about the cultural background of the Metis sash. This afternoon we once again had an amazing visit from Jeff Stockton. He took us through activities where we had to use our imagination, as well as teamwork, without saying a word. He ended his story today as a cliffhanger and we have to wait until Monday to hear the rest! Ask us what we think will be the ending to this mystery. Today we started off with Music with Mrs. Hartley where we did a music draw and practiced recorders. We followed up with our yoga session. Our class affirmations today were "we are creative" and "we are respectful." In Social we are still working on our Alberta Travel brochures. Unfortunately Jeff Stockton was unable to make it to North Haven today due to weather, but we will see him tomorrow. Instead, we developed a page in our visual journals about our work with Jeff Stockton. Our first section includes a sketch of what we visualized while he told the story yesterday. In math, we started designing colour patterns to represent patterns in Metis sashes. This afternoon, we played hockey in gym, worked on animal life cycles in science and continued our yarn art. Dear Parents, As you know, the Oct. 24 provincial budget left the CBE with a $32 million shortfall. As this is a mid-year cut, the CBE must act quickly to present a balanced budget to the Board of Trustees before January 2020. Complex decisions are being made in a short time frame to balance our budget. One of the most difficult decisions is to end full-year temporary teaching contracts at CBE schools. Temporary staff were informed this week, and the cuts will be effective January 2, 2020. This budget decision impacts our school; some of our students are in classrooms with temporary contract teachers. While this decision may impact your child in January, please know we will continue to support positive transitions and effective teaching and learning. Continuity of learning is important, and we are working to minimize disruption to the greatest extent possible. We are in the midst of making several other decisions to cover our budget gap and will inform you of information as it becomes available. I appreciate the support many of you have expressed during this time of change and I want you to know that we are dedicated to each of your children and will continue to enhance learning opportunities focused on student achievement and wellbeing for learning. Sincerely, Lisa McConnell Principal North Haven School |
