Dear Parents/Guardians,
We would like to thank you for being responsible with your health and the health of all our community members. The recent school closures have resulted in some creative thinking about how the duration of our cancellation can look. During class cancellations, the Grade 3/4 teachers are supportive of educational experiences at home. In the coming days, we will be communicating our plans as they are developed. In the meantime, we wanted you to know that we have been learning about fractions, and we’re going to begin learning about decimals (grade 4) in Mathematics. In literacy, we just wrapped up our opinion and persuasive writing on the Calgary Ring Road. Our next unit is narrative writing. In Science, the two units we have been focusing on are called, Testing Materials and Designs along with Building with a Variety of Materials. In Social Studies, we have been exploring Global Citizenship by learning the rights of a child and the 17 sustainable global goals to understand how our actions might affect people elsewhere in the world. We recommend that in the coming days you could support your child in developing routines for learning from home. It is suggested to maintain your child’s school routine Use school as the framework and honor what had been your child’s routine:
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us, Sincerely, Ms. Henry, Ms. Wishart, Ms. Merilovich The Grade 3/4 Teachers

Today we began with morning work, including math, goal setting, and journals. We then had our Spelling Bee and marked a partner's booklet. Please sign today's test and return to school next week.
We then had Music with Mrs. Hartley. In yoga our affirmations were "We are strong" and "We are independent." Today's Daily News article introduced the blockades that began in Vancouver where the Wet'suwet'en people are protesting the oil pipeline that is to be built. After recess, we manipulated Tangrams to build a square and then we tried to determine what fraction of the whole square each shape represented. We also compared shapes and noticed that a small triangle is 1/2 a square and a small triangle is 1/2 a parallelogram. After Math, we went to the gym with Ms. Merilovich's class to participate in gym. We practiced our stance, our punches and kicks. We then played a game with a partner. Enjoy your weekend! Stay healthy and warm! Questions about the possibility of school closures can be found on the CBE information pages for the public and at Alberta Health FAQs available to parents. This morning we worked in the library on two jobs. The first was to record our reflections of our semester one goals. The second was to work with our partner on our Global Goal project. We have to research the goal (eg. Zero Hunger, No Poverty, Life on Land, Gender Equality), connect it to one of the Rights of the Child, provide interesting facts and what a citizen can do to help.
Today was our last day to work on our persuasive writing in our Literacy groups. We are now finishing up on our good copies. In Math, we talked about comparing and ordering fractions. The larger the denominator, the smaller the one piece of the pie. At lunch we had basketball playoffs to determine who will play the teachers next week. In gym, we did karate. Today we got to punch a padded mitt that our partner held. After quiet reading, we got into our science groups and began planning the blueprint of our bridge that we will be constructing next week. Please remember to bring supplies from home if needed. Tomorrow is our Spelling Bee. ***Our Gr. 1/2 Celebration of Learning has been cancelled for tomorrow. Today in our class meeting we discussed what resiliency "sounds" like. To us, it's saying things "I'm going to try that again," I'm going to try the 4 star work," and "I'm not giving up!" In speaking about resiliency we realized that Malala is a perfect example of resiliency. Even though she was severely injured in an attack, she still speaks out about equality, women's rights, education, and climate change.
We have been reflecting on our goals from semester one and this morning we began recording our reflections in Photo Booth. When we are finished we will be uploading the videos onto IRIS. In yoga, our affirmations were "We are good" and "We are strong." In Social Studies we reviewed the global goals from the website The World’s Largest Lesson https://worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org. In partners, we chose a global goal that matters to us and tomorrow we will start to plan out the design and information that will go into the form of a page for our class book. In Literacy, we switched into our writing groups. Tomorrow will be the last day for this switch as we are concluding our persuasive writing task. In Math, we reviewed fraction terms and parts of a whole or set. We then worked through our fraction centers. After lunch, we continued with Karate, ending with a fun competitive game with a partner. Ask us what we have learned so far and how to say 'yes.' After quiet reading, we finished reviewing our Building stations. We then looked at the guidelines for our project Constructing Humility in Urban Development. We are engineers who have been given the task of designing the final bridge needed on the Calgary Ring Road. In groups of 4, we will plan, design, build and test our bridges. ***For our Bridge construction, we are asking for the following materials to be donated: -string -large popsicle sticks/tongue depressors -paper rolls -tin foil Thank you! Today we began with our morning work, followed by a meeting about our Goal of the Week- to show resiliency when trying new things. We talked about what resiliency looks like and had the task to look for it in our peers' actions throughout the day.
In Social Studies we watched a video about The World's Largest Lesson https://worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org . We discussed the Sustainable Development Goals: END EXTREME POVERTY. FIGHT INEQUALITY AND INJUSTICE. TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE. We then looked at the 17 global goals to help achieve these things by 2030 and shared which goals we find most important. After recess we worked on persuasive writing in our literacy groups. In Math we reviewed fraction vocabulary, like numerator and denominator, parts and whole. We then worked through fraction stations: Frosty Fractions, fraction memory and "What Do You Notice?" in our journals. In gym we continued learning Karate. Our focus and participation is amazing! In Music we did a music drawing activity. After quiet reading, we reviewed some of the concepts we learned through our Building Stations and watched a video about different kinds of bridges. Next week, we will begin building bridges and will need some supplies donated. If you have any of the following, please send them to school: *paper rolls *straws *popsicle sticks At the end of the day, we shared some resilient actions we observed and nominated peers who demonstrated resiliency. We fulfilled our goal and received a reward token. The Spring fundraiser is Big Deal Box Cards! Please return the flyer (order form is on the back) in a ziploc bag with the appropriate amount by March 19th. Our Saint Patrick’s Day dance on March 19th from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Tickets at $2.00 at the door. Thanks for supporting North Haven! We will also be having a Grade ½ Celebration of Learning this Friday, March 13th at 9:00am. Hope to see you there! Weekly Goal: We will show resiliency by trying new and challenging things.
Daily Goal: We will do our best in Math. Today we kick started the week with a class meeting about Resiliency. What is it? What does it mean? To us it means: -risk taking -taking on challenges -trying new things -being brave -failing, but trying again -not giving up -being okay with failing -having confidence We will talking about being resilient all week- what it looks like, what it sounds like, and what it feels like. We will also nominate our peers who are demonstrating resiliency. Our new Spelling rule: Add ‘s’ to most words to make plural. Please study for Friday's test! 2* books, roads, news, words, tests 3* friends , students, buildings, numbers, factors 4* structures, materials, reflections, journals, traditions Today we switched into our Literacy groups for our persuasive writing task on the Ring Road. In Math we looked at another image for "What do You Notice?" We shared ideas and will be recording our understanding of fractions in our journals based on these two images below. In gym we started Karate. We focused on doing our best even though this might be a new experience. In Music we continued with playing the ukulele. After quiet reading, we had Health with Mr. V. He talked to us about the importance of focusing on one thing at a time so our brains don't get overwhelmed, and we don't get distracted from important tasks. **Division tests were sent home today. Please sign and return, along with Spelling Bee and Math Madness booklets. We started our morning with our Spelling Bee. We marked a peer's test before handing it in for Ms. Wishart to grade.
In Art with Ms. Wishart, we created a home made loom out of cardboard and yarn. We will use the loom and coloured yarn to weave a bookmark. In Music, we continued learning to play the ukulele with Mrs. Hartley. We then had our last day with Ms. Shirley. We got to see the banner we collectively made with other grade 3/4 and grade 5/6 classes. We then shared what we loved about this experience of dancing and creating art with Ms. Shirley. We ended the class with a round of dancing musical chairs! In French with Ms. Merilovich, we worked on and shared our French comic strips. We then brainstormed other French survival skills that we would need if we were in a francophone school. In STEM class with Ms. Henry, we built a water filter with 3-7 layers based on our plan we drew in our groups. To end the day we reflected on our Goal of the Day, We will show the 3 R's. We shared how we showed respect in all our classes today and earned a reward token! Happy weekend everyone! ***Reminders*** *We are beginning to see a lot of toys and stuffies arriving at school. Please ensure your child is not bringing toys to school. *Return Spelling Bee booklets and Math Madness booklets *Any fundraising for the card boxes can be returned with cash in a plastic bag. Thank you to all community members that were able to attend our performance last Friday with Shirley Hill, Indigenous Elder and Artist. We are excited to have another week with her where we will focus on Indigenous ways of knowing through the buffalo and regalia making. We will also be welcoming ELEV8 Lacrosse to teach us the skills and fundamentals of lacrosse. Our School Council and Parent Association Meeting is next week, Monday March 9th at 6pm in the North Haven learning commons. Everyone is welcome! Come join the conversation in regards to fundraisers, events, and residencies in our school. We are going to have a St. Patrick’s School Dance hosted by our Parent Council Association on March 19th from 5:30-7:30. Tickets will be $2.00 at the door. Today we began with some morning work, yoga and our daily news.
Our affirmations were “We are welcoming” and “We have sportsmanship.” In reading about the construction progress of the Ring Road, we learned that the project is ahead of schedule and on budget due to lower construction costs. In Social Studies, we looked at the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In groups we read and discussed some of the rights described in the articles. We also talked about Malala who is a young girl from Pakistan fighting for equality and the rights of girls. After recess, we switched into our Literacy groups. And in Math we began our new unit on Fractions! We looked at a picture of a gumball machine and were given the question "What do You Notice?" We looked at the different colors and noticed a total, different numbers of colors and patterns. We learned that instead of saying there are 2 orange gumboils, we can say there are 2/30 orange. Where do we see fractions in the real world? When might we need fractions? Have a conversation at home! Our learning intention is: I can demonstrate an understanding of fractions by explaining that a fraction represents a part of a whole. In gym we played lacrosse and not only worked on skills learned yesterday, but also had the opportunity to shoot into a net. So much fun! After quiet reading, we watched a video about arches and looked at the strengths and weaknesses of different shapes (rectangle, arch, triangle) in structures. We then completed our last building station. ***Please bring empty plastic bottles (500mL, 1L or 2L) to school tomorrow. ***We are also looking for more yarn for an art project. During morning work we finished our math tests and worked on our journal pages. After a movement break we started a novel called "Fatty Legs," which is a true story about a young girl's experience in a residential school.
After recess, we continued with our task on persuasive writing in our literacy groups. In Math we started Math Madness! We have 5 minutes to complete as many questions as we can. This week the operation was addition. When the booklets go home tomorrow, please sign and return immediately as we will do math madness weekly. Today was the first day of lacrosse with Merit. We learned how to scoop the ball, toss up and catch and do a few tricks. We than played a fun game of Hungry Hippo. Ask us how the game was played. After some quiet/guided reading, we went to the Makerspace to meet Ms. Shirley. Today we took the fabric circles we designed on Monday and ironed small pieces of fabric onto the circles and then ironed them to a larger piece of fabric. We will work with Ms. Shirley one more time on Friday. To end the day we added some finished work to our journals and cleaned up the classroom. This morning we spent some more time reviewing division strategies before undertaking the test. We did a great job persevering through this long task!
In Literacy, we switched into our writing groups. We discussed and wrote about our opinions about the noise pollution due to the Rig Road construction or the sale of Tsuut'ina land. In gym, we had our last day of basketball. On Wednesday and Thursday we have a lacrosse residency and then starting next week we have Karate! In Music we have started learning to play the ukulele. Following some quiet reading, we completed one more building station in Science. **** *Please return Spelling Bee booklets!! Students have to redo the tests if these go missing. *If anyone has any yarn they can donate for an art project, please send it by Friday. |
