What a fantastic day to end the year before the break!
Today we visited Ms. Henin's Kindergarten class to surprise them with some buddy time. We sat with a buddy (or two) and read winter/Christmas themed books to them. Then we spent a little more time with them to help them get their costumes on for their Winter Concert, followed by some coloring time. We had such a good time there! We attended the Winter Concert and enjoyed seeing our little buddies, siblings and friends perform songs. We also got to sing along at times. Our class meeting today focused on our Class Goals for the new year. We shared what we can do to make our classroom feel welcoming, motivating and calm. We worked together to develop a poster to hang in our room. We also finished making some cards to surprise some teachers in the school. Ask us about how we are starting to do "secret" acts of kindness throughout our school and maybe help brainstorm some other deeds we can do in the new year. Yes, we had to do some "work" too! We read a story called "Iniskim (Buffalo Calling Stones)" which was about a women who heard a talking stone that told her it could be used in a ceremony to call the buffalo towards Buffalo Jump. In our journals we designed a page to include a summary, connections to the story, questions and inferences about the story and a picture we visualized. Link: https://www.glenbow.org/blackfoot/EN/html/traditional_stories.htm#wolfTrail In Math we practiced the subtraction strategy of expanded form. After lunch and PE, we worked some more in our journals and worked on our Norval Morrisseau art projects, before we had some free time to end our day. We hope everyone has a wonderful break! See you in 2020! Wow!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian:
Re: Safety precautions at North Haven School The safety of all students and staff of North Haven School is of great importance. To that end, we have been working to establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded. There are other variations to our safety drills. We practiced a drill known as a “lockdown” on December 17th2019.The teachers instructed students regarding their role during a drill of this kind. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure. We continue to refine our school safety procedures, other safety precautions we now have in place include:
Yours truly, Lisa McConnell Principal Today we started off with a sharing circle about what we love about our class. We made a big paper Christmas tree and everyone made an ornament or present with a a sentence about what we love about our class to stick on the tree.
We had Music with Mrs. Hartley and then caroling in the gym with the whole school. Our affirmations during yoga were "We are welcoming and "we are respectful." Today we played revenge dodgeball in gym. After gym, we heard another Science presentation and reviewed our notes on all topics from Waste and Our World. We then had our Science test. We ended the day making cards and brainstorming ways we can spread positivity and do acts of kindness as we "Walk Together with Humility" through North Haven. ***Don't forget PJ Day tomorrow! It's the last day of school! No school on Friday, December 20th. Class resumes January 6th, 2020! Enjoy your break! Stay safe and warm! This morning we enjoyed Music with Ms. Collinge's class where we sang some songs together.
During our yoga session, our student helpers decided on the affirmations "We are welcoming" and "We are generous." Our Daily News article told us that Westjet is aiming to increase Indigenous tourism by offering new vacation packages, reporting on these tourism destinations in their Westjet magazine, and flying Indigenous leaders to Europe to promote tourism. Next, we listened to our classmates present their infographics containing research information on various topics. We learned about the Three R's, hazardous symbols, what biodegradable means and the water problems in First Nation communities. Ask us about new information we learned today from our peers. We then tested our knowledge with a game of Jeopardy. Here is the link for extra practice: https://jeopardylabs.com/play/grade-4-waste-our-world This afternoon we also had gym with Ms. Collinge's class and met the teacher that will cover Ms. Collinge's position in the new year. Her name is Ms. Merilovich. Ms. Wishart and Ms. Merilovich played Benchball with us! While we were working in our visual journals on a reflection of our science project, we had a lockdown drill. We were expecting it and knew exactly what to do. We stayed in our hiding spot until the police officer opened the door and told us we did a great job. We ended the day with caroling in the gym with the whole school! Here we are... one week to go! Excitement is definitely in the air. However there is still much work to do before our well-deserved break. Our day started with morning work to finish up or "bump" up any outstanding assignments. Following a quick trip to the library, we settled into a calm yoga session. Our affirmations were "We are protective" and "We are friends with nature." Before and after recess, we had time to work on and finish our posters on a topic of Waste and Our World with our partners. In Math, we began our focus on subtraction. Our learning intention is: We can demonstrate an understanding of subtraction of numbers with answers to 1000 (limited to 1-, 2- and 3-digit numerals), concretely, pictorially and symbolically by using personal strategies with and without the support of manipulatives. After lunch and PE where we played Rainbow Tag and Bench ball, we had a short session of quiet reading. Then it was time for Science presentations! Our focus is to recognize that human activity can lead to the production of wastes, and identify alternatives for the responsible use and disposal of materials. We listened to four presentations on the water crisis in First Nations communities, landfill issues, composting instructions and air pollution. We will hear another five presentations tomorrow. Our test on these subjects will be on Wednesday. A copy of the jeopardy review game will be posted tomorrow for extra practice. Reminders and Information for the week ahead:

After 30 minutes of morning work, we started with French in Ms. Collinge's room. In our visual journals, we wrote French and Blackfoot color words.
In STEM class with Ms. Henry we worked on our dioramas which represent animal life cycles. We are working in groups to create different habitats and to represent the stages of the animal's life cycle. Today the Gr. 5/6 classes put on a Celebration of Learning assembly about Entrepreneurial Mindset and their trip to camp. They included stories, poems, songs, French narratives, math problems and wellness projects. We also saw pictures of their camp trip. Ask us what our favourite part of the assembly was. To end the day, we had time to work on art or science and then we played a game called Toy Shop together. Today we started with our morning catch-up work. We had to finish up on our Math Problem of the Week and artifact journaling.
In Music we practiced our song for Community Outreach Night tonight. We are to be there at 5:15, ready to play at 5:30. Our affirmations were "we are strong" and "we are athletic" in yoga. Our Daily News article was about how deforestation and climate change are affecting animals such as fish, caribou, wolves and birds. We shared connections and provided suggestions for solutions. After After a quick review with Math Jeopardy, we were feeling quite confident and ready for our Addition Test. During the test we were super quiet and focused! In P.E. we played curling matches and kept score. Both matches were very close, one ended in a tie and the other had a difference of only two points. There was great cheering on all teams. In Science most groups started their good copy of their Waste and Our World infographic assignment. Out goal is to finish them by Monday to present to the class. Hope to see everyone out tonight!

Friday December 13th KERNELS popcorn snack at recess Thursday December 19th SUBWAY lunch This morning we spent some time reflecting on our trip to the museum, what we did there, what we learned and what we could have done to get more out of the experience. Together we set some goals surrounding focus, respect and work ethic for the coming weeks leading up to the break. In follow up to our field trip, we later worked on our journaling booklets and wrote what we observed and learned about Symbols and the Blackfoot Language.
In Music we practiced a song called Dizzy's Bag on our recorders. Today we also started hand chimes. We are preparing for a performance on the Community Outreach Night, which is this Thursday night at 5:30. Everyone is welcome to attend! **We are still in need of grey felt donations for our Outreach Night activity! Thank you to all donations of supplies already received! Our yoga affirmations today were "we are strong" and "we are protected." Our Daily News article was about some women who went on a journey in Banff National Park to follow the bison. They had connections to the bison because their ancestors hunted the buffalo and one had a grandfather who was involved in signing the Buffalo Treaty that helps protect the buffalo. Ask us what we have learned about the growing buffalo population in Banff. Our new "Problem of the Week" in Math is about the growing buffalo population. We have to calculate how many buffalo there might be in the next 5 years. We will write a pattern rule and then represent the pattern and addition needed using base ten blocks and a chart. The next step is to represent the information in a bar graph. In gym, we did curling. We practiced our skills of "throwing" the rocks aiming for the circular target, the "house." We are looking forward to another focused and project-filled day tomorrow! |
