Today we started our day in Music. We continued to practice the song, "Silently We Stand," for our upcoming Remembrance Day Assembly on November 8th. In yoga, our daily affirmations were we are strong and we are caring. In daily news, we read an article about Halloween and Halloween safety. Ask us how we can demonstrate humility on Halloween. We then worked on our Daphne Odjig artist study. Ask us what is unique about her style? In Math, we continued with place value. Our learning intention was I can represent and describe whole numbers to 10 000, pictorially and symbolically. We are representing numbers using chart, standard form, expanded form, written form, ordering (least to greatest), comparing (greater than, less than), number line, estimating, and rounding. Tomorrow we will be creating our own understanding of place value in nature. Here are some images of what we have come up with so far, as well as some student quotes. We will be using these ideas for our walk to Nose Hill tomorrow. We will be leaving the school at 10am. Please dress warm. If you would like to come to future walks, please email Ms. Dunwoody at [email protected]. We then finished on our Indigenous Tourism Travel Alberta brochure rough draft.. We were just adding any finishing touches today. Our learning intention was I can assess, critically, how the cultural and linguistic heritage and diversity of Alberta has evolved over time. After lunch, we played tag games in gym. We then worked on our animal research project. We were just finishing the roughdraft for this as well. Students will have a bit of time to finish anything needed tomorrow. Ask us what we learned about our animal. Our learning intention was I can demonstrate awareness of parental care of specific animals. Halloween is tomorrow. We will be dressing up in the afternoon. Please wear regular clothes in the morning and then we will change at lunch. No masks, make up, or weapons. A reminder that there will be no school Friday as it is a PD day. We are going home tonight and reflecting on how we can help our classroom community and make positive choices in our day. What do we personally need to improve on? Principal Update, November
November 2019It is hard to believe we have completed two months of learning and are already almost into November! The first eight weeks have given staff time to work closely with your child, getting to know them as a learner and setting goals as we work towards our first official reporting period next month. Being able to spend time in each class I see firsthand the focus on academic success, including time spent to build community that is critical to each student’s social/emotional development and is part of our continued focus on wellbeing in learning. Having our teacher/student/parent conferences last month also gave families the opportunity to once again meet with their child’s teacher to further develop learning plans and goals for the year. Throughout October, we as a staff, have been using a wide range of data sources to develop our school-wide focus for ongoing student success. The School Development Plan (SDP) is an important document that teachers use in their daily practice and grade team planning. This year our focus will be on solving highly complex mathematical problems, acquiring meaning from and creating new narrative texts, and developing goals for academic, social, and emotional resiliency. The time we have spent as a staff over the past eight weeks analyzing achievement data from last year (report card marks, performance exams, and teacher created assessments) to develop a data driven plan addresses any gaps or trends in our student achievement. Our planning was shared at the last School Council meeting on October 22nd at 6:00pm for input and feedback. A final copy will also be posted on our website by November 15th, 2019. November will be a busy month for our students as we continue to focus on learning and being connected to our school community. We just finished a dance residency and will have an upcoming story-telling residency, intramurals, and trips outside the classroom. North Haven will continue to be a hub of activity for both students and teachers. Our daily work continues to focus on student success through the personalization of learningwhile supporting the Calgary Board of Education’s ‘Results’ in the areas of: Citizenship, Personal Development and Character. I would also like to remind everyone that there is no school on Friday, as it is a Professional Development Day. In addition to this reminder, I am pleased to let you know that after the transition of our fees system to new software, you are now able to pay fees online using your MyCBE account. Information on central fee waiver applications is now available on the CBE website at: https://cbe.ab.ca/FormsManuals/How-to-apply-for-a-fee-waiver.pdf Applications can be completed online at: www.cbe.ab.ca/mycbe Please let me know if you require an application and we will send it home with your child. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child’s learning. Please continue to read your child’s classroom blog to review learning intentions and visit our North Haven website for upcoming events Sincerely, Lisa McConnell Principal Today we started our day in Music.
