Happy Monday everyone!
Today started off with some time to finish up our Division Problem of the Week and any other work due. We then went to the library for book exchange. Please check at home for any overdue books. In yoga our affirmations were "We are creative" and "We are wonderful." Our Daily News article was about the construction of the Rig Road. We read that two sections are complete ahead of schedule. No one can use those roads yet, but it's a good thing the construction is progressing well. Our new spelling rule is: For past tense, add -ed to verbs. If the word ends in an 'e', just add 'd.' 2* 3* 4* talked explained demonstrated worked divided recycled danced composted communicated shared discussed deconstructed voted organized monetized Today we also switched into our Writing Groups for opinion writing. This morning we had a class discussion about Pink Shirt Day and the meaning of equality.
As part of our Global Citizenship Socials unit, students worked in groups to talk about what equality means to them and represented their understanding on a poster using the 'SEEI' method. S- State or define equality. E- Elaborate or clarify. What is equality not? E- Exemplify. Give a real life example. I- Illustrate what equality means to you. Tomorrow we will present our posters to the class. ***Don't forget to wear pink shirts tomorrow! In Math, we worked on some division questions reviewing all our strategies. We then had math stations to practice our multiplication and division skills, including an advanced division group at Ms. Wishart's table. We had our second session with Ms. Shirley Hill. Today she talked about the cultural significance of the Buffalo Jump and shared some personal stories with us. We practiced another part of our dance. Our performance is on Friday at 11:00. Following Music with Mrs. Hartley, we had Science. We started rotating through our stations on Testing and Building Materials. Some of us made arches and pillars, while others tested materials and learned of their properties. ***Keep studying your spelling at home! This morning following morning work, we went to the library for book exchange.
During yoga our affirmations were "We are mindful" and "We are polite." Our Daily News article was about the ceremony for naming part of the Ring Road Tsuut'ina Trail. Today we started our Spelling unit. Our spelling rule this week is: Drop the 'e' then add 'ing.' Students aiming for 4 Star will need to spell all the words in the list. Please review and practice these spelling words throughout the week. The test will be on Friday. 2* 3* 4* writing creating empathizing caring practicing cooperating loving dividing persuading making stating debating hoping describing believing After recess, we had our first Writing Workshop switch. Students have been grouped according to ability and will be working with either Ms. Wishart, Ms. Merilovich or Ms. Henry. Our focus is on the construction of the Ring Road and the pros and cons of some of the issues we've been discussing during our Daily News. We will then participate in persuasive writing tasks to express our opinions of some of these issues. For four star work, students will be writing their opinions in a persuasive letter. In Math, we reviewed some of our division strategies with a word problem. We then practiced some algorithm questions. After lunch, we met Shirley Hill in the gym. She is doing a hoop dance residency with us this week and an art project with us next week. The Shirley Hill Indigenous dance assembly is this Friday at 11:00am. All are welcome to attend. In Music, we worked on our drumming skills and some of us presented them. To end the day, we reviewed the book "I have the Right to be a Child." We shared why we think rights are important and what we would do if we were missing any rights. Homework: Talk about what 'equality' means. Pink Shirt Day This year, Pink Shirt Day, or Anti-Bullying Day, is on February 26. It is a day when people come together by wearing pink shirts to school or work to show they are against bullying. The focus for 2020 is "lift each other up." North Haven Leadership students will be back on the 'kindness patrol' all week, looking for evidence of students making kind choices to lift each other up. Please talk as a family about the huge positive impact that choosing kindness can have on the life of another person. We are excited to welcome Shirley Hill, an Indigenous Artist in Residence, to North Haven. She will be joining us for two weeks! The first week she will be teaching us about Indigenous dance and the second week she will be teaching us about traditional ways of knowing through the buffalo and regalia making. Please join us at the end of our first week, Feb 28th at 11:00am, for an assembly to share our new knowledge of Indigenous dance! Our regalia and buffalo collages will be showcased in our school after completion. Following our morning work, we went to Music class. In Music we got papers with a grid on it. We had to write quarter notes, half notes, quarter rests and eighth notes. Then we had to play the pattern on the drums.
In Art, we researched Jennie Thlunaut, who was a Tlingit artist. She wove traditional blankets. She learned to weave from her mother when she was 10 years old and was still weaving when she was 98! In French class, we learned some new vocabulary. We learned how to say different feelings and how to say "Can I go to the bathroom please?" Ask us if we remember! In STEM, we learned about how in some reserves, they get infections from the water. Our new project is to make a filter and test it. To end the day, we had a desk change and game time. Have a great weekend! Our morning started with time to finish up our Social projects and KWL chart for Hearing and Sound.
We then did yoga. Our affirmations were "We are awesome" and "We are brave." In our Daily News article we learned that the TsuuT'ina nation has requested that the whole Ring Road be named TsuuT'ina Trail and not just the 10 km portion in the south. We discussed why we agree or disagree with this request. In Social Studies we are beginning a unit on Global Citizenship. Our learning intention is: I can explore the concept of global citizenship by reflecting upon the question: How are the rights, responsibilities and roles of citizens in communities around the world the same or different than those of Canadian citizens? We read a book called "I Have the Right to be a Child." We discussed what rights are, listed some rights and shared how we would feel if we didn't have the right to clean water, an education, shelter, etc. Following recess, the last two groups performed their Shadow skits. We gave feedback and then completed our own self and group assessments. In Math, we worked on another challenge question. The word problem was missing key information and we worked out ways to solve the question. We also practiced the strategy of estimating. During lunch there was basketball intramurals. In gym, we played "Light it Up" to warm up our basketball skills. Then grade 3s played a game and grade 4s played a game. We are also starting a new unit in Science. Today we explored different structures and their functions, watched a Bill Nye video on structures and began a journal page describing and depicting the definition of structures. Today we started with our morning work.
We then did yoga. Our affirmations were 'We are mindful' and 'We are generous.' Our Daily News article was about the Tsuu T'ina nation's opinion on the economic benefits of the sale of their land to Calgary for the Ring Road. We learned that they want to expand business developments in their community. In Literacy, we started performing our shadow puppet skits in our groups. After each performance we gave peer feedback regarding speaking, sound effects and use of hand puppets. We had quiet reading after recess and watched two more shadow puppet skits. In Math, we warmed up with a division challenge question that had multiple answers. We had the opportunity to share our ideas and strategies. Today's strategy was "Halving." For example, to solve 42 divided by 7, you can halve the 42 and solve 21 divided by 7, which equals 3. Then you double the 3 to get 6, because 42 divided by 7 equals 6. In gym, we warmed up with a tag game. Then half the class played a basketball game while others practiced dribbling and shooting. Then we switched sides and the other students got to play a game. Tomorrow Basketball Intramurals start! This afternoon we worked the 'L' section on our Hearing and Sound KWL chart. Our goal for 4 stars is to write 12 things we learned in this unit. **Please sign and return Math tests. Tomorrow students will be coming home with their Science tests for signing. Welcome back everyone!
Starting this week, our schedule is changing slightly. We will now have Music Monday and Tuesday afternoons, as well as Friday morning. After morning work, we had our class meeting and read our Daily News article. It was about the sale of land by the Tsuu T'ina membership for the construction of the Ring Road. We discussed the pros and cons of the sale of land, as well as the construction of the road itself. In Social Studies we listened to our last two presentations. One was on the Tikuna people of Brazil and the other was about The Gonds of India. In Math, we practiced two division strategies: Number line and Repeated Subtraction. We looked at how the two are related and how they are the reverse of familiar multiplication strategies. After lunch, we played Light it Up. It is a basketball warm-up game where we have to do different skills depending on the "light" Ms. Wishart calls out. For example, red light means stop, green light means walk and dribble and sunlight means sit down and dribble. At the end of the day, we had our final session with our groups to practice our Shadow puppet skits.
